Indonesia Mandates Ministry Approval for Used KRL Imports from Japan

Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation will require approval from the ministry for imports of used electric trains (KRL) from countries like Japan. This measure aims to protect the domestic railway vehicle manufacturing industry and ensure the safety standards of imported vehicles. Previously, used trains, particularly KRLs from Japan, have been imported to replace aging rolling stock and expand transportation capacity in Indonesia. However, the government, aiming to foster domestic industries, has been advocating for reduced import dependency and enhanced domestic production capabilities. Upon receiving import applications for used vehicles, the Ministry of Transportation will comprehensively assess factors such as the vehicle's condition, safety, and impact on domestic industries before deciding on approval. This new regulation will subject imported vehicles to stricter scrutiny. This move is seen as part of efforts to strengthen the role of domestic industries in Indonesia's railway infrastructure development. Conversely, it is also pointed out that a slowdown in used vehicle imports could affect the expansion and maintenance of railway services in some regions.
