Cambodia to Issue New 50,000 and 100,000 Riel Banknotes

The Cambodian government has approved the issuance of new 50,000 and 100,000 riel banknotes by the National Bank, to circulate alongside existing currency. This decision was made under the directive of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The issuance of new banknotes is considered a measure aimed at stimulating the domestic economy and stabilizing the financial system. While the US dollar has long been widely circulated in Cambodia, promoting the use of the national currency, the riel, is crucial for enhancing the nation's economic independence. In the past, the National Bank of Cambodia has strived to prevent counterfeiting and maintain currency value through currency updates and design changes. In particular, the introduction of high-denomination banknotes can also address aspects such as the increase in transaction volume accompanying economic growth and responses to inflation.
