100 Kilos of Shark Meat Seized, Buried in Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard and fishing regulators seized 100-kilos of sliced shark meat stocked inside a cooler at Veteran’s Wharf in the Cagayan port town of Aparri on Monday (September 21). The shark meat was being transported from Sitio La Union in Barangay Macanaya, when it was intercepted by the intelligence units. The confiscated shark meat was immediately buried, as it was suspected to have been illegally caught and transported in violation of environmental laws. This incident highlighted the importance of marine wildlife protection and adherence to sustainable fishing practices in the Philippines. Despite having an extensive coastline and rich marine resources, illegal fishing and poaching of endangered species remain serious issues. Sharks, in particular, play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems, making their conservation an urgent priority. The seizure demonstrates the authorities' firm stance against illegal activities. The Philippine Coast Guard plans to intensify its maritime patrols and rigorously crack down on illegal fishing. They will also strengthen cooperation with fishing regulators to promote awareness for the sustainable use of marine resources.
