COTABATO CITY — An Army corporal and a teacher were killed, while a civilian driver was critically wounded in an ambush in Barangay Lamin in Malabang, Lanao del Sur on Saturday afternoon, June 27. Officials of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office and Capt. Steffie Salanguit, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, separately told reporters on Monday afternoon, June 29, that Cpl. Jayson Castro, from an Army unit based in Malabang, died from bullet wounds sustained in the attack. Castro and his companions, among them members of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit, were riding in a white Toyota Hilux pick-up truck, returning to their command post from a security mission, when gunmen positioned along a highway in Barangay Lamin opened fire, killing him instantly. The ambushers also fired M14 and M16 assault rifles at a tricycle trailing the vehicle ridden by Castro and his companions, killing its passenger, the female public school teacher Hapipa Saripada Macadato. Castro's companions managed to return fire, forcing the assailants to flee. The ambush left the civilian driver of the pick-up truck, Richard Estomen, wounded and now confined to a hospital. Salanguit said officials of the Malabang Municipal Police Station, local executives and traditional Maranao community leaders in the municipality are working together to identify the gunmen behind the attack for persecution.
