Cambodia Boosts Rural Women's Income and Local Industry Through Support for Traditional 'Hol' Silk Weaving

Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An has affirmed that supporting traditional Cambodian silk products, particularly the 'Hol' silk, contributes to job creation and increased income for rural women farmers and weavers, while also promoting local products. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also President of the Cambodian Women's Association for Peace and Development, alongside Mrs. Aly Vongnorabountham, Central Committee Member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of the Lao Women's Union, during a visit to a 'Hol' silk weaving workshop in Trapeang Svay village, Kdam commune, Prey Kabbas district, Takeo province, on July 25, 2026. 'Hol' silk weaving is an ancient craft and art form that reflects Cambodia's culture, history, and way of life from ancient times to the present. Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An stated that supporting these silk and 'Hol' products helps create jobs and increase income for women farmers, silkworm raisers, and weavers in rural communities. Furthermore, it helps reduce foreign cloth imports and elevates local products to compete in the international market. This weaving art also promotes traditions and the sustainable development of the textile sector globally, while fostering economic independence and financial inclusion for women weavers across the ASEAN region. Mrs. Ouk Davy, a weaver, expressed her immense joy at seeing numerous national and international leaders visit and interact with the handicraft artisans. She conveyed her concern over the current lack of strong consumer support for Cambodian silk and 'Hol' products. She appealed to all Cambodian citizens to support Cambodian silk and promote local products as a means of preserving the heritage of this art form and providing encouragement to the producers.
