Thailand Orders Heightened Security at Schools, Public Sites After Nonthaburi Violence

The Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) has ordered tighter security measures nationwide following the deadly school violence in Nonthaburi province, including increased checkpoints targeting firearms and illegal drugs and additional security at schools and other public locations. DOPA Director-General Narucha Kosacivilize instructed provincial and district authorities to step up enforcement of firearms laws, increase patrols and establish checkpoints in public areas, high-risk locations and entertainment venues. Firearms registrars were also directed to remind licensed gun owners to securely store firearms and ammunition to prevent access by others. Authorities were instructed to increase security at schools, religious sites, shopping malls, and other major public locations; conduct emergency-response drills; and provide guidance on appropriate action during emergencies. Local officials will also monitor behavior that could indicate a risk of violence and encourage parents to pay close attention to potential warning signs among children and young people. DOPA also directed local authorities to coordinate assistance for those affected by violent incidents, including psychological care, compensation, and other support available under the law. (NNT)
