TACLOBAN CITY—The Northern Samar Provincial Hospital (NSPH) has exceeded its maximum bed capacity, prompting the provincial government-run facility to ask partner health facilities and the public to limit referrals to patients needing specialized or higher-level medical care. In a public advisory on Thursday, NSPH reported 372 total bed admissions, compared with its 302 implementing beds. This situation highlights the strain on healthcare infrastructure in the Philippines, particularly in provincial areas. The increase in patient admissions appears to be outpacing the availability of hospital beds and medical personnel. There is a tendency for medical resources to be concentrated in metropolitan areas, leaving provincial regions with limited access to advanced medical care. The NSPH's measure is likely intended to maintain the capacity to treat critically ill patients by temporarily suspending the admission of less urgent cases. However, concerns remain that patients needing specialized treatment may face difficulties in accessing appropriate care.
