Philippines Eyes Power Access for Over 100,000 Households Via Microgrid Push

The Department of Energy (DOE) is pushing for the development of microgrids to expand electricity access to over 100,000 households that remain without power in remote and last-mile communities across the Philippines. According to the DOE, approximately 101,468 unenergized households in 369 unserved and underserved areas across 23 provinces are potentially eligible for microgrid competitive bidding, pending further validation and final determination. A microgrid is a localized electricity system that generates and distributes power to communities difficult to connect to the main grid. Its capacity typically varies based on factors such as the number of households served, local electricity demand, and available energy sources. The DOE aims to provide prospective investors with ample time to evaluate potential sites, assess project requirements, and prepare viable proposals by releasing this initial list ahead of formal competitive selection process (CSP) rounds. The agency has also established a site-specific assessment framework to support pre-feasibility studies and enhance the evaluation and packaging of prospective microgrid projects. "For families in remote and last-mile communities, electricity means more than keeping the lights on. It supports education, livelihoods, health services, communications, and economic opportunity," stated DOE Secretary Sharon Garin. The initiative seeks to bring reliable and affordable electricity closer to unserved communities, while offering capable investors a clear pathway to contribute. Areas not included in a specific CSP may still be considered through unsolicited proposals. This push for microgrids is a significant step towards addressing infrastructure disparities within the Philippines, expected to boost rural economic activity and improve the living standards of residents. The government is keen on attracting foreign investment to expedite project implementation.
