Vietnam, Argentina Eye Broader Mercosur Access Amid Free Trade Push

Vietnam sees significant potential to deepen trade and investment ties with Argentina and the Mercosur bloc, considering them important partners in South America. This was highlighted by Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina, Ngo Minh Nguyet, during the 30th Export Day held in Buenos Aires. Under the theme "New Export Frontier: The Transformation Underway," Ambassador Nguyet expressed Vietnam's intention to pursue broader trade agreements with Mercosur countries. This move is seen as part of Vietnam's strategy to strengthen its position in global supply chains and expand access to new markets. Mercosur, an economic integration bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, serves as a crucial gateway for Vietnam into the South American market. Negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) are currently underway between Vietnam and Mercosur, which, if realized, is expected to reduce trade barriers and boost exports and imports between the two regions. Vietnam's economy has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, driven by its manufacturing sector and export-oriented economic model. Under its one-party system, the Communist Party of Vietnam prioritizes economic growth and actively promotes foreign investment and the signing of free trade agreements. Strengthening ties with South American markets is strategically important, particularly for diversifying supply chains and reducing economic reliance on China. Argentina has also shown a positive attitude towards enhancing trade relations with Vietnam, with local experts expressing optimistic views on the progress of the Vietnam-Mercosur PTA negotiations.
