Can Tho, Guangxi Seek Logistics, Supply Chain Collaboration

Can Tho City, located in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region, is aiming to strengthen collaboration with China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the logistics and supply chain sectors. This move is seen as part of Vietnam's strategy to deepen regional economic integration and expand its role in global supply chains. Currently, Chinese investment is already active in Can Tho City, with 35 projects underway totaling nearly $1.2 billion in registered capital. In the first seven months of 2026, Can Tho's exports to China reached $77.5 million, while imports stood at $64.7 million. Key exports include rice, seafood, agricultural produce, processed agricultural products, and apparel, while main imports comprise agricultural chemicals, veterinary medicines, fertilizers, chemicals, fabrics, and other materials and inputs. Under Vietnam's one-party system, economic growth is a crucial pillar supporting the government's legitimacy. Strengthening regional economic ties is particularly vital for invigorating the domestic economy and enhancing international competitiveness. The collaboration between Can Tho City and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is expected to further promote economic exchange between the two regions by leveraging their geographical proximity to reduce logistics costs and streamline trade procedures. While economic ties with China are significant for Vietnam, they also entail geopolitical complexities.
