Vietnam's New Coffee Habit: Potential for Kidney Protection and Vascular Rejuvenation
A new way of drinking coffee in Vietnam, by adding extra virgin olive oil to black coffee and frothing it, is gaining attention. This method is suggested to enhance anti-inflammatory effects and potentially contribute to kidney health and vascular rejuvenation.
A new way of drinking coffee is gaining traction in Vietnam, with health-conscious individuals embracing a method that involves adding extra virgin olive oil to black coffee and frothing it. This practice is suggested to enhance anti-inflammatory effects, contribute to vascular health, and potentially protect kidney function. Numerous studies have already demonstrated the health benefits of coffee. However, according to Dr. Hong Yongxiang from Taiwan, the way one consumes coffee can determine whether it acts as a health "supporter" or a harmful agent. By substituting refined sugar and fatty creamer with extra virgin olive oil and frothing it at high speed for 30 to 45 seconds, antioxidant molecules are believed to be transported more effectively to damaged vascular cells. Dr. Hong Yongxiang cites a large-scale study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD), which indicated that individuals who drink a moderate amount of black coffee daily might reduce their risk of chronic kidney disease by 11-18%. This is attributed to chlorogenic acid, a potent antioxidant found in black coffee, which provides effective anti-inflammatory benefits to the renal vascular system. Furthermore, another study published in the journal Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (NDT) suggests that a reasonable intake of caffeine can promote the release of nitric oxide from blood vessels, improving blood flow to the kidneys and thereby significantly supporting the organ's function. Olive oil is rich in polyphenols and monounsaturated fatty acids. These compounds have the ability to reduce chronic inflammation in the body and can significantly slow down the progression of glomerulosclerosis and vascular endothelial damage. Dr. Hong Yongxiang explains that when olive oil is combined with black coffee in appropriate proportions and stirred at high speed, natural emulsification occurs. This process creates ultra-fine lipid particles that act as tiny protective capsules, encapsulating the chlorogenic acid and polyphenols from the olive oil. This encapsulating structure helps these vulnerable active compounds to survive the acidic environment of the stomach and reach the damaged vascular cells more effectively. To adopt this method, Dr. Hong Yongxiang advises: Prepare 200 ml of freshly brewed hot black coffee in a cup. Add 15 to 20 ml of extra virgin olive oil. Use a milk frother to whisk at high speed for 30 to 45 seconds until the oil and coffee are completely incorporated, forming a smooth, yellowish, emulsified foam on the surface, similar to a latte. Maintaining this daily habit is presented as a simple way to protect and enhance kidney health.
