Motorbikes Topple Repeatedly on Repaired National Highway 51

A series of motorbike accidents are occurring on National Highway 51 in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam, due to ongoing road repair work. This situation has prompted the provincial Traffic Safety Committee to request enhanced safety measures from relevant departments. The issue stems from paving and infrastructure development projects underway in several sections along National Highway 51. Construction sites involve excavation, temporary material storage, and altered traffic lanes, which are creating unforeseen hazards for motorcyclists. Accidents, particularly during nighttime or adverse weather conditions when visibility is reduced, often result from hitting potholes, sudden uneven surfaces, or unexpected obstacles. Local residents and motorcyclists have voiced concerns about the dangers posed by the construction. One resident stated, "It's scary to ride on this road at night. Suddenly there are holes or scattered materials; an accident could happen anytime." Commuters using this route are also facing increased travel times and the need to find alternative routes. The Dong Nai Provincial Traffic Safety Committee has instructed construction contractors to ensure proper safety signage, adequate nighttime lighting, smooth road surfaces, and clear warnings for passing vehicles. Additionally, they have been directed to increase the number of traffic controllers during construction periods and ensure the safe operation of construction vehicles. While Vietnam is rapidly advancing infrastructure development in line with its economic growth, there are instances where safety management at construction sites has not kept pace. The case of National Highway 51 highlights one of the challenges Vietnam faces: how to effectively manage the risks that arise during the process of infrastructure development, even as it brings benefits to society.
