Cambodia Enhances Traffic Safety Measures at Accident-Prone Spots on National Road 5

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has intensified traffic safety measures on National Road 5 in Krakor District, Pursat Province, in response to frequent traffic accidents. Under the directive of Minister Peng Ponea, spokesperson Phon Rim led a technical team, the Pursat Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, and representatives from the Pursat Provincial Police on a site inspection on July 2. Additional traffic safety equipment was installed at a section of National Road 5, specifically between kilometers 149 and 150, which has been a hotspot for accidents, particularly at the start of the rainy season. The technical team from the ministry and the Pursat Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport studied the technical characteristics and collected traffic data at the aforementioned location to identify the causes and find effective solutions to ensure the safety of citizens. It is noteworthy that the location is a populated area where, according to traffic law, the speed limit is 40 km/h. The road design for the National Road 5 upgrade project, funded by Japanese grants, has taken into account technical standards and socio-economic impacts. The team found that the primary issue causing accidents is speeding, especially on sharp curves. Regarding preventive measures, the team focused on making vehicles slow down before entering the curves. They have installed additional equipment to enhance driver awareness, and importantly, added highly effective equipment that functions well during the day, at night, and in rainy conditions. The technical team began installing this equipment on June 29 and anticipates completion by the end of this week, with high hopes of eliminating future traffic accidents at this spot.
