Yamaha Exciter: Two Decades of Evolution in Vietnam's Sport Underbone Market

Yamaha pioneered the sport underbone segment in Vietnam with the Exciter in 2006. Initially equipped with a 135cc engine, its sporty and angular design offered a fresh alternative to the common, smaller-engine commuter bikes, attracting enthusiasts of style and sporty experiences. The introduction of the manual clutch version in 2009 laid the foundation for Vietnam's manual motorcycle culture, solidifying Yamaha's position in the segment. By 2011, a model with a 5-speed gearbox, distinctive styling, and enhanced sporty handling was released. A significant milestone arrived in 2014 with the first-ever 150cc engine, electronic fuel injection (FI), aerodynamic design, and larger rear tires. The 2019 update brought LED headlights, an LCD display, passing function, and an emergency engine cut-off switch. In 2021, the latest iteration featured a 155cc engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology, a 6-speed gearbox, Assist & Slipper Clutch, and styling inspired by the YZF-R1. The 2023 model further enhanced sporty performance with the addition of front ABS brakes. Alongside product upgrades, Yamaha has cultivated a strong Exciter owner community, a key factor in the model's distinct appeal. Approaching its 20th anniversary, Yamaha Motor Vietnam is promoting a new message for the Exciter, positioning it as a "Sport-Premium" offering through its performance, technology, design, and riding experience. The latest Yamaha Exciter 155 VVA-TCS focuses on engine improvements, control systems, connectivity technology, and design. It uses a 155cc engine delivering 18.5 horsepower at 9,500 rpm, featuring a high compression ratio inherited from the YZF-R15 and VVA technology for optimized high-rpm power. The Traction Control System (TCS) automatically adjusts torque to limit wheel slip during acceleration, especially on slippery surfaces. The front is equipped with ABS and a 267mm disc brake. With a 6-speed gearbox, Assist & Slipper Clutch, and a new intake system with a larger air filter box, the new Exciter promises a sound experience akin to larger motorcycles. Smart connectivity via Y-Connect allows synchronization with smartphones for tracking ride logs, parking locations, and accessing an extended dashboard. Its multi-function digital display provides various operating parameters. The model adopts the "Downforce Movement" design language for optimized aerodynamics, with updated front fascia, a slightly raised windscreen, revised rear lights, and exhaust cover.
