Vietnamese Coast Guard Rescues Fishing Boat in Rough Seas, Escorts to Phu Quy

On September 8, it was reported that Vietnam Coast Guard vessel 467 is rescuing and escorting fishing boat LĐ 95888-TS, along with its 21 fishermen, back to Phu Quy island after the boat suffered engine failure amidst adverse weather conditions. The fishing boat became stranded approximately 126 nautical miles east-northeast of Phu Quy island. At the time of the incident, the sea was experiencing complex weather with southwesterly winds at levels 5 to 6, and waves ranging from 3 to 4 meters, posing a threat to the safety of the fishermen. Upon receiving the rescue order, vessel 467 rapidly mobilized and reached the fishing boat at 11:30 PM on September 7. Due to rough seas, rescue personnel could not immediately board the fishing boat but maintained contact, assessed the situation, and provided remote support. The health and psychological condition of the 21 fishermen are reported to be generally stable. Currently, vessel 467 is towing the fishing boat towards Phu Quy island, with an expected arrival at the port early on September 9. This incident underscores the importance of maritime safety along Vietnam's extensive coastline and for its many fishing-dependent communities. As Vietnam pursues economic growth under its one-party system, ensuring the safety of its citizens at sea remains a critical concern.
