Vietnam on Alert for Extreme Weather in Next 10 Days, Disaster Preparedness Ordered

The National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention in Vietnam has instructed 21 coastal provinces and cities to proactively respond to extreme weather patterns over the next 10 days. According to the forecast from the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center, a tropical convergence zone is expected to form in the East Sea region starting September 9th, with its axis likely to affect the central region of Vietnam. Specifically, there is a high probability of a tropical depression forming in the central East Sea between September 12th and 13th, with the potential to strengthen into a typhoon afterward. From September 10th to 17th, the central region of Vietnam is likely to experience widespread moderate to heavy rainfall. This brings with it a heightened risk of tornadoes, lightning, flash floods, landslides, and localized flooding. Vietnam has historically been vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly typhoons, floods, and landslides. The Vietnamese government, operating under a one-party system, prioritizes disaster preparedness and response, coordinating efforts through its centralized command structure. As the country continues its economic growth, efforts are being made to reduce vulnerability to disasters alongside infrastructure development. In recent years, concerns about the impacts of climate change have also grown, necessitating preparedness for increasingly unpredictable weather events.
