Vietnam Prioritizes Climate Action and Environmental Protection in National Strategy

The Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Committee has formulated an action plan to position climate change response and environmental protection as national strategies. This plan is an implementation of the Central Committee's Conclusion No. 75-KL/TW, adopted on July 28, 2026, concerning environmental protection and proactive response to climate change in the new era. This action plan was signed and promulgated by Mr. Tran Cam Tu, a Standing Member of the Politburo, aiming to strengthen environmental protection and climate change response while continuing to improve the efficient operation of Vietnam's political system and its two-tiered local government structure. Notably, measures to combat severe natural disasters such as landslides, floods, droughts, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region are included as part of the government's action plan. This region serves as the foundation for Vietnam's food production and is directly affected by climate change, making its vulnerability a pressing issue. While achieving rapid economic growth, Vietnam faces risks from climate change, including sea-level rise and extreme weather events. This decision clearly demonstrates Vietnam's commitment to balancing economic development with environmental conservation. The process of setting national priorities and translating them into concrete action plans under its one-party system reflects the characteristics of Vietnam's policymaking. Furthermore, in its relations with China, environmental issues present both aspects of cooperation and concern, but enhancing domestic sustainability is also crucial for strengthening Vietnam's geopolitical standing in the region.
