Ilonggo band brings Philippine metal to Germany's Wacken

Sentient Void, a metal band from Panay, Philippines, has made waves by representing the country at the Wacken Metal Battle Final in Germany. The Ilonggo band, known for its heavy and dark sound, competed on the international stage after winning the local leg of the prestigious competition. The band comprises vocalist Richard Arengo, guitarist and vocalist Kevin Sombero, bassist Stephen Benedicto, guitarists Dr. Alfred Gregore and Atty. John Paul Ernest “Jope” Ravena, and drummer Lemuel Anthony Gadong. Five members hail from Iloilo, while Gadong is from Roxas City, Capiz. Their journey to Wacken began years ago as high school friends, Arengo and Sombero, who would spend time at internet cafes watching livestreams of bands performing at the world's largest metal festival. This shared dream fueled the formation of Sentient Void in 2022. Drawing influences from bands like Meshuggah and Slipknot, they aim to create music that elicits a "dreadful yet enjoyable feeling," characterized by chainsaw-style Swedish guitar tones, a deep bass, grooving drums, and powerful vocals. Beyond their sound, Sentient Void emphasizes theatrical live performances to create memorable experiences for their audience. The band's name itself, inspired by the "Warp" in Warhammer 40,000, reflects their atmospheric aspirations, echoing philosophical notions of the abyss. In 2024, the band released their debut EP, "Aberrant." Despite holding regular jobs, the six members, who jokingly call themselves "the 6 angry salarymen," dedicate their weekends to rehearsals and performances. They highlight the importance of time management and commitment in balancing their careers with their passion for music. The road to Wacken was not without its challenges. As an independent band, Sentient Void faced significant financial constraints, requiring last-minute equipment upgrades to meet international standards. However, their participation in the Wacken Metal Battle Philippines, a competition for unsigned metal bands, provided the platform to showcase their talent. In Germany, the band not only performed but also connected with musicians, promoters, and producers from around the globe, finding common ground through their shared love for metal, regardless of language barriers. Sentient Void achieved a significant milestone by winning the Wacken Metal Battle's first-ever Online Fan Vote Award, along with a €2,500 cash prize. They attribute this success to the immense support from their families, friends, fans, and the local music community. The band expressed immense joy and pride in being the first all-Ilonggo, born and raised, metal lineup to perform at an international event. Their Wacken experience has broadened their horizons, transforming their initial plan of playing music for a few years before retiring into a new path with the potential for greater opportunities and wider reach.
