Vietnam's Top Leader Urges United, Resilient ASEAN Community

Party General Secretary and State President To Lam received ASEAN ambassadors and chargés d'affaires in Hanoi on August 4. The meeting coincided with the 59th anniversary of ASEAN, the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, and the 31st anniversary of Vietnam's accession to the regional bloc. During the reception, General Secretary Lam underscored the importance of a "united and resilient" ASEAN Community, acknowledging the complex geopolitical landscape and economic fluctuations the region faces. He particularly highlighted the escalating impacts of climate change, such as extreme heat and drought conditions, which are increasingly affecting the region, and stressed the necessity for ASEAN to collectively address these challenges. As a key member of ASEAN, Vietnam has consistently demonstrated its commitment to promoting regional cooperation. For Vietnam, which continues to pursue economic growth under its one-party system, a stable regional environment is fundamental to its development. Furthermore, the ASEAN framework holds strategic significance in its foreign relations, particularly concerning its relationship with China. General Secretary Lam's call can be interpreted as an indication of Vietnam's intent to further strengthen intra-regional coordination and counter external influences. The discussions reportedly covered a wide range of topics, including the future development direction of ASEAN, economic cooperation, and security. Vietnam has indicated its continued commitment to contributing to the deepening of regional cooperation, drawing on its past experience as ASEAN Chair.
