Vietnam Braces for Heavy Rains as Tropical Depression Approaches Central Coast

Vietnam's central coastal region is bracing for heavy rainfall as a tropical depression approaches, with authorities enhancing public information dissemination and evacuation readiness. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts widespread downpours, particularly in provinces from Ha Tinh to Hue, with localized rainfall potentially exceeding 350mm between October 13th and 14th. As of 11 AM on October 13th, the tropical depression's center was located off the coast of Quang Tri province, approximately 120km east-southeast of Dong Hoi city, with maximum sustained winds of 6級 (39-49km/h) and gusts up to 8級. The system is forecast to move northwest at 10-15km/h over the next 24 hours, making landfall between Ha Tinh and Quang Tri provinces from the evening of October 13th to the early morning of the 14th. It is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area after landfall. In response to the anticipated heavy rains, the Directorate for Water Resources and Disaster Prevention has coordinated with Zalo Vietnam to send safety guidance messages to 22 million subscribers in the affected provinces and cities. Border guards and local authorities have also notified over 53,000 vessels and 211,000 people, urging them to move away from dangerous areas. Initial impacts from heavy rains have already been reported in several central provinces. In Quang Tri, 10 sections of roads, bridges, and submerged crossings are inundated, causing localized blockages. Da Nang city has evacuated 101 households from areas at high risk of landslides. Minor landslides have occurred on the Tuy Loan - La Son expressway and several roads in the central region, but have not significantly affected traffic. In Hue city, two locations on National Highway 49 experienced slope collapses, with initial repairs underway. Quang Ngai province reports over 63 hectares of rice and other crops submerged, and a provincial road segment is flooded.
