Flooding in Romblon Forces Preemptive Evacuation of 12 Residents

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Twelve residents from three families were preemptively evacuated early Saturday (Aug. 8) from a flood-prone village in Odiongan, Romblon, as continuous heavy rains triggered rising floodwaters amid the southwest monsoon, or “habagat.” The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Odiongan worked together to move the residents to safer grounds. The area has been experiencing persistent rainfall for several days due to the effects of the southwest monsoon. Local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of the community. Flooding is a common occurrence in the Philippines during the rainy season, often exacerbated by monsoons and tropical cyclones, particularly in low-lying and riverside areas.
