Global diaspora protests target Thai embassies over normalization with Myanmar regime

Myanmar nationals and international supporters staged coordinated demonstrations outside Royal Thai Embassies across six countries on Wednesday. The global campaign demands that the Thai government halt diplomatic engagement with Myanmar’s regime leader Min Aung Hlaing and cease forced deportations of refugees. Global campaign overview & diplomatic demands Demonstrators delivered open letters to Thai diplomatic missions in Tokyo, London, Washington D.C., Canberra, Seoul, and Paris. The letters warned that high-level bilateral engagement grants political legitimacy to a military regime that seized power in a 2021 coup. The protests follow Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to Bangkok on Aug. 6–7, where he met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to discuss border security, trade, and regional cooperation. Protesters voiced strong opposition to Thailand’s re-engagement policy, urging Bangkok to respect the democratic will of the Myanmar public. Deportation directives and conscription hazards Protesters raised severe concerns regarding Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s Aug. 26 deportation framework, which establishes accelerated removal procedures for foreign nationals accused of overstaying visas, illegal entry, or working without authorization. Protesters also called on Thailand to begin engaging with Myanmar’s pro-democratic forces, such as the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF), which includes the National Unity Government (NUG) and four key ethnic armed resistance forces.
