Vietnam to Step Up Enforcement of Safe Distance Violations on Highways
Vietnam's government has ordered intensified enforcement of safe distance violations on highways. Following media reports, measures to ensure traffic safety and reduce congestion are being expedited. Public awareness of relevant regulations will be boosted, and provisions will be reviewed based on practical conditions.
The Vietnamese government has ordered an intensification of enforcement against safe distance violations on highways. This directive follows media reports highlighting traffic violations and accidents, particularly concerning the failure to maintain safe distances between vehicles on expressways, which occurred during the initial days of the National Day holiday (September 2). Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has instructed relevant ministries (Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Construction) and local authorities to promptly investigate and handle the issues raised by the media within their purview, or propose solutions for matters exceeding their authority to higher levels. The objective is to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure traffic order and safety, especially in major urban centers. Ministers of Public Security and Construction, along with chairpersons of the People's Committees of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, have been directed to strictly implement the Prime Minister's directive (dated August 19) to minimize traffic congestion, accidents, and safety issues during holidays and festivals. They are also tasked with accelerating the progress of key transportation projects scheduled for completion before the 2027 New Year holiday, including Hanoi's Ring Road 2.5, 3.5, and Capital Region Ring Road 4, as well as Ho Chi Minh City's Ring Road 3. Furthermore, the completion of key gateway and regional connection expressways such as Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay, Bien Hoa-Vung Tau, and Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong is to be expedited. The Ministry of Construction, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security, other ministries, local authorities, and media agencies, will enhance the dissemination of policies related to the Ministry of Transport's Circular No. 38/2024/TT-BGTVT (dated November 15, 2024) on vehicle speed and safe distances, and the Government's Decree No. 168/2024/NĐ-CP (dated December 26, 2024) on administrative penalties for road traffic safety and order violations. This includes provisions for driving license point deductions and restoration. Additionally, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Security and relevant agencies, a thorough review and assessment of current safe distance regulations, penalties, and practical driving conditions will be conducted. This aims to develop comprehensive solutions for ensuring traffic safety. Matters requiring authority beyond their scope will be reported to the Prime Minister within September. Source: Nhan Dan
