Cambodia Calls Thai Rebuttal 'Confession of Aggression,' Welcomes UN Human Rights Verification

The Cambodian government has announced its welcome for an independent international verification regarding the issue of Cambodian refugees, stating its readiness to facilitate such a visit. This statement comes in response to Thailand's rebuttal of a report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Cambodia. In a statement dated August 7th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that while Thailand contested the number of refugees, it acknowledged that its military actions had impacted Cambodian civilians, preventing their return. The ministry accused Thailand, stating, "Thailand's rebuttal is akin to a confession that the country has indeed invaded and displaced Cambodian citizens." Regarding the Special Rapporteur's report indicating that approximately 650,000 Cambodian civilians were displaced in border areas late last year, with over 20,000 still displaced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this aligns with figures compiled by UN agencies and humanitarian partners operating in the border regions. Currently, aid activities such as food provision and shelter are underway in these areas. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Cambodia's commitment to the agreement dated December 27, 2025, and urged Thailand to fully respect it. Cambodia also stated that it will continue to engage with the United Nations Human Rights Council on all issues raised by the Special Rapporteur and looks forward to comprehensive and constructive discussions on the situation at the upcoming session of the Human Rights Council.
