Heavy Rains Cause Flooding on Naguilian Road in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Continuous heavy rains have caused temporary flooding along a section of the Baguio–Bauang Road (Quirino Highway) in Barangay Irisan, Baguio City, prompting the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to warn motorists to drive with caution on Friday, Aug. 7. In a public advisory, the DPWH said floodwaters have accumulated along the road. This area is known to be prone to flooding, especially during periods of intense rainfall. Such localized flooding is a recurring issue in the Philippines, often exacerbated by the monsoon season and the passage of tropical cyclones, which can disrupt transportation networks. Baguio City, due to its elevation and topography, is particularly susceptible to flash floods when heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems. This incident highlights a broader challenge faced by the Philippines: the increasing frequency of extreme weather events attributed to climate change, and how infrastructure vulnerabilities can amplify their impact.
