Thailand Approves Jewish Remains Transfer, But Complex Procedures Limit Confirmations

Thai authorities have indicated a policy to permit the transfer of Jewish remains discovered at the Nong Son cemetery in Si Racha District, Chonburi Province, by their relatives. However, it has been revealed by local administrative officials that the transfer requires adherence to established procedures, and currently, only one set of remains has had its identity confirmed and its transfer requested. The issue came to light when multiple sets of remains were found during some form of work at the Nong Son cemetery. The possibility that these remains were Jewish was raised, prompting the Thai Jewish community and related organizations to engage in the response. If relatives wish to claim the remains, they must undergo identity verification according to Thai regulations and obtain permits for transfer. Authorities are prioritizing the protection of the remains' dignity and ensuring their appropriate handling. However, due to the number of remains, the process of identifying them, and the complexity of the procedures, it is uncertain whether all remains can be transferred promptly. The Jewish community in Thailand is relatively small, and a lack of sufficient experience and infrastructure for managing and transferring remains may also be contributing to the procedural complexities.
