Digital Radicalization Amplified by Algorithms, Starting with a Single Click

Concerns are being raised in Indonesia about the potential for algorithms to inadvertently amplify exposure to extremist ideologies within the digital space. This issue is believed to be exacerbated by mechanisms where a user's 'single click' on content can lead to further exposure to radical materials. Platforms on the internet widely utilize algorithms that display content based on user interests. However, there is a risk that these algorithms may prioritize displaying content containing extremist ideologies and propaganda, inadvertently drawing users into radicalization pathways. There are particular concerns that younger demographics and individuals with insufficient information literacy are more susceptible to these algorithmic 'traps.' A single click driven by curiosity could gradually become a catalyst for leaning towards extremist ideologies. To address this issue, there is a call for platform providers to enhance algorithmic transparency and strengthen the filtering of extremist content. Furthermore, expanding educational programs aimed at improving public information literacy is considered essential in preventing radicalization in the digital space.
