Cambodia: Youths and 3 Monks Apprehended in Night Patrols

In Baset district, Kampong Speu province, Cambodian authorities have apprehended six groups of youths totaling 13 individuals, along with three monks found wandering late at night. The operation was part of a broader security initiative to maintain public order. Under the directives of Major General Khim Sokha, the Provincial Police Commissioner, and led by Colonel Chorn Sophit, the Baset District Police Inspector, in cooperation with 15 commune police posts, conducted patrols to enforce security and public order, aligning with the "Safe Village-Commune-District" policy. The operation, which took place on August 2, resulted in the detention of these groups and eight motorcycles. The individuals were found roaming public roads late at night. Specific details of the groups and their locations were noted, including the apprehension of a 15-year-old boy and a 27-year-old man. Following their apprehension, the youths were questioned regarding potential involvement in any incidents. Their guardians were summoned to sign educational pledges and agreements. The seized motorcycles will be held for 90 days. The three monks, who had left their temples to roam at night, were handed over to the Department of Religious Affairs for violating monastic discipline. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by Cambodian authorities to address juvenile delinquency and maintain social order, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The involvement of monks in such activities also draws attention to the adherence to religious codes within the community.
