Calmette Hospital Recognized as Cambodia's First 'Center of Excellence in Diabetes Care'

Calmette Hospital in Cambodia has officially been recognized by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) as the country's first 'Center of Excellence in Diabetes Care' (CENTRED’EXCELLENCE EN DIABETOLGIE). This designation signifies the hospital's adherence to international standards and its advanced medical services in the field of diabetes treatment. The official recognition ceremony took place on July 21, 2026, with Professor Kong Soniya, Director General of Calmette Hospital, presiding. According to Associate Professor Chhith Sotta, Head of the Diabetes Unit at Calmette Hospital, the hospital established Cambodia's first Insulin Pump Center and has trained doctors, nurses, and DES students in its use. Furthermore, they have implemented Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and a dashboard system to enhance patient monitoring efficiency. Associate Professor Chhith Sotta also highlighted investments in state-of-the-art medical equipment, including devices for fundus examination for diabetic patients, Sudo Scan for neuropathy assessment, Doppler Vasculaire ultrasound for vascular evaluation, ultrasound for cytopuncture, and DEXA Scan for bone density and body composition measurement. These instruments not only aid in patient treatment but also create opportunities for international-standard research. Director General Kong Soniya stated that this honor is a testament to the efforts of the hospital's leadership, particularly the diabetes unit team. He expressed gratitude for the leadership of the former Director General, now the Minister of Health, under whom the establishment of the Insulin Pump Center and the training of medical personnel were advanced. He added that this recognition is a collective achievement for patients, staff, and Cambodia as a whole. Director General Soniya expressed hope that this recognition will serve as a catalyst for further development in diabetes care, training, and research for the health of Cambodian citizens and the international community.
