Tri An Lake's Low Water Level Reveals 'Green Grasslands' Amid Drought, Affecting Water Supply

Tri An Lake, located in Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam, is the country's largest artificial hydropower reservoir, covering an area of 323 square kilometers. Currently in its annual dry season, the lake's water level has dropped to between 50.4 and 50.8 meters. This significant decrease in water level has exposed parts of the lakebed, creating vast green plains that resemble a 'green grassland.' This unique landscape has attracted considerable interest from residents and tourists, offering a new experience. However, this situation is severely impacting water supply. The low water levels, coupled with widespread algal blooms, are making it difficult for the Gia Tan Water Supply Company to draw raw water. Consequently, the stable supply of water to some residents and businesses in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City is being threatened. To address this issue, the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee has requested the Tri An Hydropower Company to maintain the lake's water level at approximately 52 meters, particularly during peak demand periods. This measure aims to ensure the stable operation of the raw water intake system, limit algal intrusion, and maintain the operational capacity of the Gia Tan water plant. Tri An Lake is a vital source of water for the lower Dong Nai River and a critical piece of infrastructure supplying drinking water to millions. While low water levels during the dry season are a recurring phenomenon, the impact of algal blooms on water supply presents an ongoing challenge.
