Veteran orthopedic surgeon Jose “Brix” Pujalte Jr. has been appointed the new Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH). Pujalte, with over 35 years of medical practice, has served as the Medical Center Chief of the Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC) since 2014.
Veteran orthopedic surgeon Jose “Brix” Pujalte Jr. was named as the new secretary of the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, July 13, shortly after Secretary Teodoro Herbosa tendered his resignation. Pujalte, a medical practitioner for about 35 years, has been serving as the medical center chief of the Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC), a 700-bed tertiary hospital under the DOH, since 2014. His father, Dr. Jose Magallanes Pujalte, also headed the POC under the regime of former president Ferdinand E. Marcos. Pujalte took his oath at Malacañang in the presence of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday, July 14. An educator and author, Pujalte completed his medicine degree from the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila in 1990. He then entered the POC as an orthopedic resident the following year. He later obtained a master’s degree in hospital administration from the Ateneo Graduate School of Business in 1996. He has also completed numerous fellowships both in and out of the country. An educator, Pujalte has been teaching at UP Manila, the Far Eastern University–Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, and the San Beda College of Medicine. He has also authored three general medicine books and, in a 2023 PeopleAsia feature as one of their “Men Who Matter,” mentioned co-authoring an orthopedic textbook chapter with his father that has been cited in local and international journals. In 2008, Pujalte secured Career Executive Service eligibility, which means that a person is qualified to hold top-level positions in the government. Prior to becoming the POC chief in 2014, he became president of the Philippine Orthopedic Association in 2009 and of the ASEAN Orthopedic Association in 2010. He is also the founding president of the Philippine Shoulder Society and a founding member of the Philippine Spine Society. Pujalte was known to have fought against the privatization of specialty hospitals in 2014, including the POC. In a 2018 Philippine News Agency report, Pujalte was quoted as saying that indigent patients would have suffered if the privatization had pushed through. “Kaya ang unang tanong rin ng mga empleyado, saan pupunta ‘yung mga mahihirap (First and foremost, hospital employees were asking, where would the poor go)?”
