Chiang Rai Police Seize 2.8 Million Meth Pills, 2 Suspects Arrested

CHIANG RAI – Police stopped a major drug smuggling operation in northern Thailand and seized a staggering 2.8 million meth pills near the Mae Sai and Chiang Saen borders. The determined suspects tried to bypass main road checkpoints by taking quieter, rural border routes. However, highly coordinated regional police units were already waiting in the area to intercept them. Authorities received reliable advance tips about the drug gang’s planned movements in the northern region. They quickly set up tight surveillance along the quiet border roads to catch the smugglers. Soon, a silver Toyota MPV matching the exact description appeared near San Thanon village. Investigating officers immediately moved in and signaled the speeding driver to pull over safely. The panicked driver refused to stop and quickly sped away from the waiting police units. He drove recklessly toward Ban Chom Kit village in a desperate bid to escape justice. The dangerous pursuit finally ended when the suspect parked at a local village public park. He threw open his car door and desperately tried to escape the authorities on foot. Police commanders divided their forces to handle the chaotic situation at the public park. One rapid response team chased the fleeing driver and quickly pinned him to the ground. The other specialized team searched the abandoned silver Toyota MPV for the suspected illegal goods. Inside the vehicle, they found 14 colorful woven sacks packed tightly together in the back. Each incredibly heavy sack contained roughly 200,000 illegal meth pills wrapped in protective plastic. The massive total haul amounted to a staggering 2.8 million pills heading for local streets. This successful seizure highlights the ongoing battle against border drug smuggling in northern Thailand. The arrested driver was officially identified as 30-year-old Anucha from Nakhon Ratchasima province. During intensive questioning, Anucha admitted he rented the vehicle specifically for this illegal transport job. He told police that a shadowy buyer promised him 130,000 baht to move the drugs. His strict instructions were to drive around aimlessly until someone sent a secure drop-off location. However, alert police officers captured him long before he could deliver the illicit cargo. Anucha also revealed that another hired man was driving a pilot car ahead of him. This important scout vehicle helped check the local roads for hidden police security checkpoints. Officers quickly expanded their active search and tracked the second car to Mae Chan district. They soon arrested the second suspect, 38-year-old Thaworn, who also traveled from Nakhon Ratchasima. Thaworn offered a very similar confession to the police after his swift and sudden capture. He freely admitted that the criminal gang hired him for the same 130,000 baht fee. Interestingly, both men clearly stated they had not yet received any money for their crimes. Local authorities are now holding both men in custody as they carefully examine the seized drugs.
