BI, BOC Enhance Border Control Through Joint Training

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the Philippines have conducted a joint training aimed at enhancing coordination in border control operations. The training, held from August 24 to 28 at the Heritage Hotel Manila, involved personnel from both agencies studying relevant laws, operational procedures, risk management mechanisms, and coordination protocols. A key outcome of the training was the proposed joint standard operating procedure (SOP). According to Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno, this SOP is designed to improve operational efficiency and information exchange between the two agencies, establishing specific protocols for intelligence sharing, coordinated screening, inter-agency handover, and coordinated secondary inspection. This joint training represents a significant step towards improving security and efficiency at the Philippines' borders. Close cooperation between the two agencies is crucial for addressing threats such as illegal immigration, smuggling, and the entry of terrorists. Given the Philippines' archipelagic nature and extensive coastline, effective border management is fundamental to national security.
