Dragon Fruit Prices Surge Due to Heavy Rains, Impacting Exports
Dragon fruit prices are soaring in Vietnam's Central Highlands due to reduced yields from heavy rains. Red-fleshed varieties have seen significant price hikes, allowing farmers to recoup losses, while retail prices have doubled. The impact on exports is also a growing concern.
Prices of the red-fleshed variety have increased to VND20,0000 in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, where the fruit is being harvested. Farmers, who were selling at losses back in May, said they are now making profits of VND3,000-4,000 per kilogram. Retail prices have also doubled from May, with regular dragon fruit selling at VND25,000 per kilogram and red-fleshed ones at VND40,000. Canh, president of the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association in Lam Dong, said output has also declined in recent years since many farmers switched to other crops after a prolonged period of low prices. He added that the weather has reduced the supply available for exports. Customs data showed dragon fruit exports fell 3% year on year to $280 million in the first half of the year. Vietnam has 55,000-60,000 hectares under the fruit and an annual output of around 1.4 million tons.
