US Nuclear Carrier Docks in Vietnam Amid Geopolitical Risks and Trade Friction

The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington is expected to dock in Da Nang, central Vietnam, this week, according to reports from the South China Morning Post (SCMP). This port call occurs amidst a complex international landscape, including escalating tensions in the Middle East, geopolitical shifts surrounding Iran, and the imposition of tariffs by the United States on Vietnam. Analysts view this visit as a demonstration of the enduring strength of US-Vietnam relations. Professor Carl Thayer from the University of New South Wales in Australia stated, "Cooperation between the US and Vietnam is not interrupted by the fighting in Iran or the US redeploying some military assets to the Middle East." He added that bilateral defense cooperation has remained steadfast despite President Donald Trump's tariff policies and other issues. The visit takes place as the two nations' relationship deepens, following Vietnam's upgrade of ties to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" in September 2023, the highest level of diplomatic relations for Vietnam. The USS George Washington and its carrier strike group passed through the Luzon Strait on July 22, heading into the East Sea after nearly two months of operations in the Philippine Sea. This carrier strike group possesses advanced capabilities, including F-35 fighter jets, and is active in maintaining freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea. The US Ambassador to the Philippines wrote on social media, "We oppose excessive maritime claims worldwide." However, this move towards enhanced military cooperation presents a different picture on the economic front. On July 24, the Trump administration announced that Vietnam would be among 60 trading partners subject to new trade tariffs, shortly after temporary 10% tariffs expired. The new tariff rate for Vietnam is 12.5%, effective from 00:01 Eastern Time on July 25. The reason cited for the tariffs is Vietnam's alleged failure "to issue and effectively enforce an import ban on goods produced by forced labor," according to a Federal Register conclusion published on July 24, 2026. Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it "will continue to exchange with the US in a constructive and cooperative spirit" and has requested Washington to fully assess the measures Vietnam has taken to adjust the 12.5% tariff. The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade has instructed businesses to enhance origin tracing, supply chain transparency, and input control to reduce the risk of Vietnamese goods being associated with forced labor or failing to prove their origin when entering the US. The docking of the USS George Washington marks the fourth US aircraft carrier visit to Vietnam since 2018.
