Hoan Kiem Lake Turtle Faces Extinction Risk, Conservation Efforts Intensify

The extremely rare and endemic large softshell turtle in Vietnam, commonly known as the Hoan Kiem Lake turtle, is facing significant conservation challenges. This species is widely recognized as critically endangered due to its extremely low population numbers. It is now widely believed that there are likely no living individuals of this precious creature remaining in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake. Therefore, gathering further scientific evidence and implementing practical conservation solutions are crucial to opening opportunities for finding and protecting the last genetic resources of this unique species. This issue is part of broader efforts to conserve biodiversity in Vietnam. In the past, conservation activities for many wild animals have been undertaken, including endangered species of langurs in Ninh Binh, rare fire foxes in Pu Mat Nature Reserve, and the establishment of a conservation area for the Kim Bang white-headed langur. These examples suggest that the Vietnamese government is focusing on maintaining biodiversity. The urgent need for actions to protect wildlife populations highlights the severity of the environmental issues the country is facing. The case of the Hoan Kiem Lake turtle indicates the need for prompt and effective responses based on scientific evidence in implementing environmental policies under Vietnam's one-party system. Balancing economic growth with environmental conservation is an essential element for Vietnam to pursue sustainable development.
