Cambodia NEC Explains Retention of Secretary-General Post-Retirement
Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC) has clarified the reasons behind the continued service of its Secretary-General, Tep Nitha, who has officially retired. He will continue in his role as a contracted official, citing institutional necessity within a legal framework.
The spokesperson for Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC), Mr. Hang Puthea, has confirmed that Mr. Tep Nitha will continue to serve as the NEC's Secretary-General, even after his official retirement. According to Mr. Puthea, Mr. Tep Nitha and other retired officials will continue to be employed as contracted personnel, based on the NEC's needs. "After retirement, those who retire can still hold positions as contracted officials for a short or long period, depending on the institution's necessity. Therefore, even though a royal decree may order retirement, they cease to receive salaries as civil servants of the NEC, but continue their work as contracted officials or members of the National Election Committee," Mr. Puthea explained. Furthermore, Mr. Puthea added that retired NEC officials can also serve as advisors or assistants to the NEC, depending on the requirements of the work. It is worth noting that the Acting Head of State of Cambodia, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, has decided to retire 10 officials of the NEC from the ranks of senior election officials, effective June 1, 2026.
