Cambodia to Host International Parliament Speakers' Summit in August, Aiming to Revive Multilateralism

Cambodia is set to host the 2nd International Parliament Speakers' Conference (ISC) in Phnom Penh in August 2026. This summit is expected to serve as a high-level international parliamentary diplomacy platform, bringing together legislative leaders from various countries to discuss and seek solutions for pressing global challenges. Chea Thireth, spokesperson for the Cambodian Senate, stated that the conference will contribute to strengthening the role of parliaments, promoting shared peace and prosperity, and fostering cooperation among participating parliaments. He emphasized the importance of reviving multilateralism, particularly in contrast to the growing trend of unilateralism. "We want to bring back the role of parliament in promoting the implementation of multilateralism and respect for international law," Chea Thireth remarked. Hosting this international meeting demonstrates Cambodia's role in contributing to the resolution of international issues, aligning with the government's objectives and the priorities set by Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen. His two main priorities are accountability between voters and senators, and parliamentary diplomacy. Cambodia accepted the request to host the conference from Mr. Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Speaker of the Senate of Pakistan and founding chairman of the ISC. The conference is scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh from August 26 to 28, 2026, welcoming parliamentary leaders from around the world. According to Chea Thireth, over 50 parliamentary leaders from various countries and more than 10 international organizations have responded positively to participate in the conference, along with numerous experts and researchers.
