Vietnam Accelerates Universal Health Check-ups to Enhance Preventive Care

Vietnam is accelerating the implementation of universal health check-ups, a policy stemming from Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW adopted by the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee last year, which focuses on breakthrough solutions for enhancing the protection, care, and improvement of public health. This resolution positions the enhancement of national health as a key state priority, strengthening investment in preventive medicine. Specifically, the provision of free regular health check-ups and screening tests is being concretized across various regions nationwide. The aim is to promote early detection and treatment of diseases, thereby improving the overall health standards of the population. Furthermore, efforts are underway to integrate and link medical insurance treatment data to VNeID, Vietnam's national identification application, to streamline healthcare services and enhance information provision to citizens. While Vietnam has achieved rapid economic growth, it is also transitioning into an aging society, making the extension of the healthy lifespan of its citizens an urgent issue. Under its one-party system, the government views public health as a foundation for social stability and economic development, pushing forward with a focused approach on preventive medicine. This can be seen as a long-term strategy aimed at controlling healthcare costs. This initiative also provides an opportunity to improve access to health check-ups for residents in remote rural areas and economically disadvantaged groups. For instance, in Da Nang city, over 4,100 residents of Tam Hai island commune received free health check-ups. The Vietnamese government is also developing strategies and roadmaps for building a sustainable healthcare system, with the acceleration of health check-ups being a part of this endeavor.
