Cambodia Proposes Enhanced Cooperation with Laos on Cyber Fraud Crackdown

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, has proposed sharing expertise and experience in combating cyber fraud with Laos. This proposal was made during a meeting held on June 29, 2026, at the Ministry of Interior, on the occasion of the 2nd Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Ministerial Meeting. Lieutenant General Vanthong Kongmany, Minister of Public Security of Laos, requested that Cambodian experts collaborate and share their experience in researching and cracking down on technology-based fraud crimes with the relevant officials of the Lao Ministry of Public Security. Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha fully agreed with the proposal, stating that the Cambodian Ministry of Interior also intends to establish a standing cooperation mechanism within the framework of law enforcement officials from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. This mechanism aims to exchange information and share experiences in preventing, suppressing, and cracking down on technology-based fraud crimes, which are transnational offenses intertwined with neighboring countries and the global community. Laos' Minister of Public Security, Lieutenant General Vanthong Kongmany, expressed his encouragement and joy towards the Cambodian government, including the Ministry of Interior, for actively cleaning up these criminal activities and achieving notable results. He also shared that in Laos, technology-based fraud criminals are attempting to hide and commit crimes in small locations within local communities. Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha noted that after large-scale operations, remaining criminals in Cambodia are still trying to use new methods. Some are renting small locations such as guesthouses and ordinary citizens' homes to commit crimes. However, he emphasized that Cambodian authorities at all levels are actively investigating and clearing these small locations, with cooperation and information provided by local citizens. Furthermore, Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha informed his Lao counterpart that approximately over 360,000 foreigners have been deported from Cambodia to date, along with those who voluntarily returned to their home countries. This follows crackdowns and findings related to technology-based fraud and illegal entry and work in Cambodia. The head of the Cambodian Ministry of Interior reiterated the Cambodian government's unwavering commitment, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, to eradicate these crimes, restore Cambodia's reputation, and save humanity globally.
