Cebu Confirms First African Swine Fever Cases in 3 Years, Raising Economic Concerns

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The province of Cebu has recorded its first reported cases of the highly contagious African Swine Fever (ASF) in the municipality of Ginatilan, prompting local authorities to impose strict movement restrictions, border controls and livestock trading suspensions to prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. Following the confirmation of ASF, the provincial government, through the Provincial Veterinary Office, has implemented immediate measures to contain the outbreak. These include the temporary suspension of live pig trading and the prohibition of pig movement from Ginatilan to other areas within Cebu and to other provinces. ASF is a viral disease that causes severe hemorrhage in pigs. It is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through direct contact with infected animals, their products, or contaminated materials. The disease has no cure and can lead to a mortality rate of up to 100% in affected pigs. Previous ASF outbreaks in the Philippines have had significant economic repercussions, leading to substantial losses for the swine industry and affecting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. The government has been implementing biosecurity measures and surveillance programs to prevent its re-emergence.
