UN Adopts Vietnam's Initiative for 'International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development'

On September 4th, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the 80th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming the 'International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development,' designating the period from 2027 to 2036 as the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development. This resolution aims to recognize culture as a vital element of development and to promote its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Vietnam championed this international initiative amidst celebrations of its Foreign Service's 81st anniversary and the 2nd of September National Day. Vietnam is actively cooperating with the UN on policy research and consulting regarding children's rights. The country also supports UN reforms towards a more efficient and streamlined organization that can adapt to global challenges. Furthermore, Vietnamese UN Peacekeepers in Abyei have received UN Medals, underscoring Vietnam's consistent stance on the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The adoption of this resolution reiterates Vietnam's commitment to highlighting the role of culture in the international arena and promoting its contribution to sustainable development. Within Vietnam's one-party system, cultural policies also serve to disseminate socialist values and strengthen national cohesion. This international endeavor can be seen as part of a strategy to simultaneously foster domestic cultural promotion and enhance Vietnam's international image. For Vietnam, a nation experiencing continuous economic growth, culture can become a source of soft power, contributing to the promotion of its tourism industry and the strengthening of its international relations. Especially in its relations with China, a regional power, cultural exchange can serve as a means for building diverse relationships.
