Lao Cai Province Strengthens Preparations Against Heavy Rains and Landslides

The People's Committee of Lao Cai Province in northern Vietnam has directed all relevant departments, sectors, and localities to urgently implement measures to cope with heavy rains, floods, flash floods, landslides, tornadoes, lightning, and hail. The aim is to minimize damage to life and property in the coming period. Lao Cai Province has frequently experienced damages due to extreme weather events, believed to be influenced by climate change in recent years. Due to its mountainous terrain and steep rivers, heavy rainfall easily triggers landslides and flash floods, posing a significant threat to residents' lives. This directive prioritizes the safety of residents living in areas with a high risk of landslides. Specifically, it calls for the development and rapid execution of emergency evacuation plans for residents from dangerous zones. Reports indicate that 16 households from villages like Ban Seo, identified as having landslide risks, have already been evacuated to safe locations. In addition to natural disaster preparedness, Lao Cai Province is also working to stabilize its economy. Reports show that over 1,200 cases of smuggling, commercial fraud, and counterfeit goods were handled in the first half of the year. This indicates an effort to prevent illicit activities that might exploit disaster-related disruptions and to foster healthy economic development. Furthermore, during natural disasters, the military is swiftly mobilized to support residents and contribute to post-disaster recovery efforts. This reflects the rapid, state-led crisis management system within Vietnam's one-party system. These initiatives by Lao Cai Province aim to enhance its capacity to respond to natural disaster risks while pursuing sustainable economic growth, representing a comprehensive approach.
