Floods, whirlwinds in northern Vietnam cause casualties, economic losses

Floods and whirlwinds in northern Vietnam have caused casualties and significant economic losses in various localities. As of 3:30 p.m. on July 17, the disasters had resulted in one death, two injuries, and five missing persons. The estimated economic damage amounts to approximately VND 255 billion (nearly USD 9.7 million), with Lai Chau province suffering the largest share of losses at VND 190 billion, followed by Son La (VND 46.04 billion), Lao Cai (VND 16.7 billion), and Dien Bien (VND 2.3 billion). The Prime Minister has instructed ministries, sectors, and local authorities to strictly implement directives on strengthening disaster prevention and response, issued by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and the Government's 2026 directives, to minimize casualties and damage to public and private property. Severe weather conditions from July 8 to 11 affected the provinces of Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen. In Son La, one person was injured when rocks from a landslide struck a car. Recent flash floods and landslides in Lai Chau province claimed the lives of six residents, with two still missing and 10 injured. Vietnam views sustainable forest management as a fundamental, long-term solution for building self-regenerating forests that adapt to climate change while continuing to deliver essential ecosystem services to citizens. This reflects a stance on balancing environmental conservation with economic growth, a key aspect of national development strategies under Vietnam's one-party system. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, infrastructure development and resource management are becoming crucial issues. These disasters highlight the persistent vulnerability to natural calamities despite rapid economic advancement. Strengthening infrastructure and disaster preparedness, particularly in northern regions bordering China, will also be a priority from a national security perspective.
