Hanoi Seeks Fundamental Solutions for Flooding in Bui and Tich River Basins

Following recent heavy rains, some areas in western Hanoi remained flooded for days after the rain had stopped. In response, the city held a meeting on September 23 with its departments and local authorities to confirm a plan to identify technical solutions and implement fundamental measures step-by-step for the persistent flooding in the Bui and Tich river basins. During the meeting, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Vu Dai Thang instructed relevant departments and localities to continue closely monitoring the affected areas, proactively respond to unexpected situations, and urgently conduct comprehensive research to identify technical solutions. He emphasized the need to implement fundamental measures in phases to address the long-term flooding issues in the Bui and Tich river basins. Vietnam is experiencing rapid economic growth but faces infrastructure challenges due to extreme weather events linked to climate change and delays in urban development. In major cities like Hanoi, population growth and urban expansion have strained drainage systems, exacerbating flood damage during heavy rains. These measures are expected to be government-led initiatives to address infrastructure vulnerabilities. While the one-party system can facilitate swift central government decisions, incorporating local community feedback and ensuring long-term sustainability remain challenges. Furthermore, in the context of complex relations with China, international cooperation on infrastructure development and environmental issues will be crucial for Vietnam's future development.
