ICTSI Secures 25-Year Extension for Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) Concession

MANILA, Philippines — Logistics giant International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) is maintaining its control over the country’s largest cargo infrastructure by another 25 years. ICTSI yesterday said it has secured approval from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to renew its concession for flagship project Manila International Container Terminal (MICT). The concession, which was supposed to expire in May 2038, gives ICTSI control over MICT until May 2063. ICTSI said it would continue to invest in the long-term growth of MICT given its role in building up Philippine logistics. The terminal, located in the Port of Manila, is one of the world’s biggest non-transshipment ports. With this, ICTSI committed to keep on expanding MICT’s capacity, and this is part of the reason the PPA granted approval to the extension. The project ranks among the world’s most efficient terminals, thanks to ICTSI’s investments on infrastructure and technology. “The renewal underscores our long-term commitment to further developing MICT to support the continued growth of Philippine trade and the country’s economic development,” ICTSI said. Currently, ICTSI is putting up Berth 8 for MICT, designed to dock the largest container vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Once Berth 8 is completed, MICT will increase its yearly capability to 3.5 million TEUs, raising the terminal’s efficiency and scaling up national trade. ICTSI is pairing expansion efforts with sustainability initiatives by adding hybrid equipment to MICT. As of 2025, MICT deploys eight near-zero rubber-tired gantries and a fleet made up of 83 percent hybrid trucks. ICTSI also brought in 43 terminal trailers, 17 skeletal trailers and 11 tractors for MICT. Further, the company accelerated gate operations to cut truck dwell time to just 47.82 minutes. Recently, ICTSI borrowed $300 million from Beijing-based multilateral Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to fund expansion efforts, marking the lender’s maiden Philippine loan without the government acting as a guarantor. The loan will bankroll the expansion of ICTSI’s terminals, including MICT, to 3.7 million TEUs by 2027.
