LTO Issues Show Cause Order Over Viral Jeepney Race in Isabela

NAGUILIAN, Isabela — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Cagayan Valley has issued a show cause order (SCO) against the drivers and registered owners of two passenger jeepneys seen racing while overloaded with passengers in a viral video taken in this town. The video, which circulated on social media on July 16, showed the two jeepneys speeding along a national highway while carrying passengers, including students riding on the roofs of the vehicles. The LTO said the drivers also failed to observe traffic rules and road signs while transporting passengers. The LTO warned the registered owners that they could be held administratively liable under the Registered Owner Rule, while the drivers may face license suspension or revocation for reckless driving. The agency said the investigation would determine possible violations of transportation laws and regulations. It also plans to coordinate with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regarding the franchises of the two jeepneys. Authorities noted that public utility vehicles in the area are often overloaded with students during the morning and afternoon rush hours, although enforcement has remained limited. The LTO reminded public transport operators and drivers to prioritize passenger safety and strictly comply with traffic laws.
