Cambodia Reports 130 Deaths in August Traffic Accidents; Stricter Law Enforcement to Begin

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Tragic road accidents continue to occur at a concerning rate. In August 2026, a total of 208 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide, resulting in the deaths of 130 people and injuries to 251 others, according to a report from the Ministry of Interior. The report from the Ministry of Interior indicates that the primary causes of these accidents include speeding, failure to respect priority, failure to keep right, dangerous overtaking, careless turning, driving under the influence of alcohol, and ignoring traffic signals, among other vehicle-related factors. Cumulatively, for the eight months of 2026, including August, a total of 1,047 people have died and 2,440 have sustained serious or minor injuries. Speeding remains the leading cause of accidents, alongside driving under the influence of alcohol. Notably, Prime Minister Hun Manet has agreed to the request from Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the National Road Safety Committee, to allow traffic police officers to strengthen law enforcement starting September 1, 2026. This stricter enforcement of road traffic laws will commence first in areas with a high incidence of traffic accidents, including Phnom Penh capital, Preah Sihanouk, Kandal, Kampong Speu, and Svay Rieng provinces. The intensified enforcement will focus on violations that commonly lead to accidents, such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, disregarding traffic signals and priority rules, and overloaded transportation.
