LTFRB Suspends PUV Fuel Discount Amid BSKE Election Ban

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced the temporary suspension of its P12 per liter fuel discount program for public utility vehicles (PUVs) starting Friday, September 18. This suspension is in effect due to the election ban for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). In an advisory, the LTFRB stated that the suspension of the P12 discount provided to public utility jeepneys (PUJs) is a measure to avoid being perceived as providing benefits to voters during the election period. The temporary halt comes as the BSKE is scheduled to be held on October 30, with the suspension implemented before the official campaign period kicks off. The provision of government benefits during election periods is prohibited by law, as it can be seen as an impediment to fair elections. Fuel costs for public transportation are a significant factor directly impacting the cost of living for many Filipinos. Fluctuations in fuel prices can lead to fare hikes and ripple effects on commodity prices, prompting the government to implement various support measures in the past. The fuel discount program was intended to alleviate the financial burden on PUV drivers and, consequently, to curb transportation costs for the public. However, during the politically sensitive election season, such support programs can be misconstrued as part of campaign activities. Therefore, the temporary suspension is considered an unavoidable measure. Attention will be drawn to whether the discount program will be resumed after the elections, if circumstances permit.
