Cambodia Warns of Localized Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds on August 1

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has issued a weather forecast for August 1, warning of potential localized thunderstorms and gusty winds across a significant portion of the country. According to the ministry's announcement, approximately 60% of Cambodia is expected to experience rain with thunder and strong gusts on August 1. The highlands, including the provinces of Oddar Meanchey, Pailin, Preah Vihear, Kratie, Stung Treng, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, and areas around the Dangrek and Cardamom Mountains, are anticipated to be most affected, covering a wide 60% of their land area. Temperatures in these regions are expected to range from a minimum of 24°C to a maximum of 35°C, with winds blowing from the southwest and northwest at an average speed of 3 meters per second. Meanwhile, the lowlands and coastal areas are also forecast to experience thunderstorms and strong winds, though the impact is projected to cover 40% of their respective areas. The lowlands, encompassing provinces such as Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat, Kampong Chhnang, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Takeo, Kandal, and Phnom Penh capital, will see temperatures between 25°C and 36°C, with winds from the southwest averaging 3 meters per second. Coastal regions, including Koh Kong, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, and areas around Bokor Mountain, will experience temperatures from 25°C to 35°C, with winds from the southwest and southeast at an average of 2 meters per second. Sea waves are expected to be between 0.50 meters and 1.75 meters in height. This weather update could impact Cambodia's agriculture, infrastructure, and daily life. In particular, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds pose a risk of crop damage and disruption to outdoor activities.
